80Chapter 4Video StimuliExperiment 1We used the same videos as in Maner et al. (2005) with one addition.Specifically, we included another sexually arousing video depicting clips fromthe movie Something New (Hamri, 2006). This movie features an AfricanAmerican heroine in the early stages of forming a romantic relationship witha White man. The other sexually arousing video depicted scenes from themovie Things to Do in Denver When You’re Dead (Fleder, 1995). Thisvideo depicted a White heroine in the early stages of forming a romanticrelationship with a White man. The clips selected from the movie SomethingNew were matched as closely as possible with the clips from the movie Thingsto Do in Denver When You’re Dead in terms of the scene content (i.e.,number of romantic/explicit scenes). The control video featured clips fromthe movie Koyaanisqatsi (Reggio, 1982). Video clips were approximatelybetween 6.5-7.5 minutes long.Experiment 2The fear-inducing video consisted of a scene from the movie Silence of theLambs (Demme, 1991), in which an FBI agent tracks a serial killer througha dark basement. The control video was the same as in Experiment 1. Videoclips were approximately between 6.5-7.5 minutes long.Target FacesFor both Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, we used the same subset of 16faces (8 female) from the Chicago Face Database (CFD; D. S. Ma et al.,2015, see Table 1). The target faces were matched closely for age and attractiveness. Only the female faces were used in Experiment 1.ProcedureAfter signing the informed consent, participants were led to the experimentalcabin. They were seated in front of a 19-inch monitor (1024 ⇥ 768 resolution;60Hz refresh rate). Participants watched one of the sexual arousal clips orthe control clip (6.5-7.5 minutes). Next, participants filled in the self-reportaffect questionnaire. Next, the researcher recited the instruction script asreported in Maner et al. (2005):“Each person you will see was instructed to relive in their mind somevery emotionally arousing event in their life, a time in their life that causeda strong emotional reaction. Once they were really feeling the emotions ofthat event again, we asked that they cover up their emotions by putting ona neutral facial expression. Then we took their picture.
