79Replication of Maner et al. (2005)4viewed the romantically arousing video would be more likely to indicateWhite highly attractive female target faces as more sexually aroused thanall other target faces as well as compared to participants that watched thecontrol video. However, if the effect reported in Maner et al. (2005) was dueto a recency effect (Baddeley & Hitch, 1993; Broadbent & Broadbent, 1981),we would expect participants to indicate Black highly attractive female target faces as more sexually aroused than all other target faces for participantsthat watched the video with the Black female protagonist compared to participants that watched the video with the White female protagonist. Weused the same video to induce fear as in Maner et al. (2005) and expectedthat international participants who watched the fear-inducing video wouldrate Black men as angrier than all other target faces compared to participants that watched the control video.MethodsParticipantsParticipants were recruited from the university student population pool andadvertisements placed on social media. In both studies, all participants werebetween 18-30 years old and self-reported normal or corrected-to-normalvision, normal color vision, and hearing acuity, being fluent in English, andnot currently undergoing psychological treatment. All participants providedinformed consent, in accordance with the declaration of Helsinki.Experiment 1Sixty (N = 60) male participants were recruited. Two participants didnot agree to the use of their data after being debriefed and were therefore excluded from further analyses. Thus, the final sample consisted of58 male participants (Mage = 21.83, SD = 2.71). Participants were randomly assigned to the control (n = 19), Black-protagonist video (n = 20),or White-protagonist video condition (n = 19). The experimental protocolwas approved by the Leiden University Ethics Committee (CEP: 2021-11-30-M.E. Kret-V1-3583). Participants were remunerated with course credits.Experiment 2Sixty (N = 60) participants (29 women; women Mage = 20.80, SD = 2.39;men Mage = 22.50, SD = 2.52) were recruited. Participants were randomlyassigned to the control (n = 30; 15 women) or fear condition (n = 30; 14women). The experimental protocol was approved by the Leiden UniversityEthics Committee (CEP: 2021-11-30-M.E. Kret-V1-3584). Participants wereremunerated with course credits.Iliana Samara 17x24.indd 79 08-04-2024 16:35
