Summary20383 With Other Eyes: This method enhances awareness among care professionals by encouraging them to observe and reflect on involuntary care practices in different settings. Implementation challenges in intellectual disability careEffectively implementing new methods into everyday care practices poses a significant challenge for care organisations. Despite advancements in implementation science over the past two decades, there remains a gap in understanding the factors contributing to successful implementation, particularly in the realm of intellectual disability care. Moreover, it is uncertain whether implementation insights from broader healthcare sectors can be directly applied to intellectual disability care due to its unique context involving long-term, 24/7 care, in which multiple care professionals need to collaborate. The focus on reducing involuntary care presents a challenge for implementation. Involuntary care is often employed in situations involving severe challenging behaviour that poses significant harm or danger which may elicit strong emotional reactions from care staff, influencing their support practices. Care staff often justify the use of involuntary care. Resistance to phasing out involuntary care measures may therefore arise. Another implementation challenge might be that each care organisation has unique characteristics, such as the size, structure, and culture of organisations, necessitating tailored implementation processes. This variability raises questions about the efforts in implementation processes and whether adapted innovations will still achieve the intended outcomes after implementation. To better understand these challenges, this dissertation aims to explore the %u201cblack box%u201d of implementation processes. The black box refers to the phase between advocating for an innovation and its actual implementation and sustainment in care practices. Normalisation Process Theory (NPT) may provide insights into this black box, helping to illuminate the processes and factors that facilitate or hinder the successful integration of innovations in intellectual disability care.
