In this study we were speci cally interested in: who are the people in a clinical context a ec ng students’ SRL, how these people have an in uence and to what extent. This knowledge is of importance because gaining a deep understanding of how other people in a clinical context can support or hinder students’ SRL can aid future a empts on improving contextual support for clinical students’ SRL. Therefore this study aims to answer the following research ques on: How do medical students perceive the in uence of other people in clinical contexts on their self-regulated learning?
Because of our socio-cultural perspec ve on SRL in clinical contexts, it is important to study students’ SRL experiences holis cally.16 Various tools for assessing self- regula on have been developed, ranging from measurement tools to microanalysis protocols.20 However, we explicitly wanted to focus on the in uence of other peo- ple. Since it can be di cult for par cipants to bring to mind all people involved in a complex se ng, therefore we chose to use a qualita ve methodology consis ng of semi-structured interviews, supported by a visual technique (the Pictor technique) to answer our research ques on.21,22,23
