Joris Berkhout was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, on June 25th 1986. He a ended high school at the Berlage Lyceum in Amsterdam, following a bilingual (English-Dutch) curriculum. He graduated in 2004, also ge ng an Interna onal Baccalaureate in English on the A2 level. In September 2004 he started his medicine study at the Academic Medical Center-University of Amsterdam (AMC-UvA). During his study, Joris was ac vely involved in the AMC-UvA student organiza on ful lling a board member role in 2005-2006. He was also ac vely involved in medical educa on, being a member of the AMC-UvA student counsel in 2007-2008 and 2010-2011, and being a member of the faculty’s clinical students counsel in 2010-2011. Whilst being a medical student Joris was also involved in a study regarding fronto-temporal demen a and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and wrote a thesis on the nger- and foot-tapping speed of pa ents with motor neuron diseases and in healthy controls. Joris received his MD degree in 2013, whilst already being enrolled in the project leading to this thesis which he started in august 2012. During the last four years Joris has been involved in several research projects as are described in this thesis, and other projects as can be read in the por olio sec on. A er comple ng this thesis, Joris is looking to go back to prac cing medicine, and meanwhile trying to stay ac ve in the eld of medical educa on research. Joris is married to Zozan Ejder with whom he lives in Amsterdam.
