climate and the form, function and location in the landscape. In this way, we gained insight into how mediaeval people themselves, in their times and regions, viewed the buildings that we now consider castles. Our results not only contribute to the body of knowledge about castles in the Oversticht area but also offer insight that helps to more clearly define the concept of a castle, distinguishing functional military architecture and the representative architecture of castles and information to help to identify the relationship between castles and the surrounding landscapes.
At a territorial level, it was impossible to reconstruct the interaction between the castles and landscapes in detail. This was possible, however, in local and micro-regional level casestudies into Hunenborg and southwest Twente, where we were able to determine the influence of the landscape on castles throughout the ages. Determining whether the model of the castle landscape applies to a specific area depends on the sources available. The sources from the Oversticht area did not allow for a clear study of the mindscape aspect. We believe that it would definitely be worthwhile to use the model for other areas in the future, preferably at various scale levels. This way, a complex phenomenon such as a castle could more accurately be placed in the right context. We hope that this study will contribute to the development of a broad interdisciplinary and spatial approach to castles and, by extension, to the theory and methodology formation of castle research.
