I would like to extend my gratitude to the staff members and lung physicians from our Respiratory Medicine department at AMC. Including the doctors whom I got to know at AMC but moved to other hospitals. Thank you Annelies Slats, Anton Vonk, Bita Hajian, Bernt van de Blink, Christof Majoor, Jaring van der Zee, Jouke Annema, Joost Aardweg, Josje Altenburg, Joris Veltman, Laurence Crombag, Niels Patberg, Paul Bresser, Peter Bonta, René Jonkers, René Lutter and Reindert van Steenwijk. Special thanks to Els Weersink who always made time to provide me words of kindness and encouragement. Thank you Els, our short “corridor chats” gave me more confidence to continue and your constructive suggestions helped a lot in the recruitment of patients and publication of manuscripts.
My thanks also to the nurses from the department. Aline, I truly enjoyed the dinner at your sister’s place. Dear ladies from the outpatient clinic, Letty, Maaike, Astrid and Rianne, I keep learning a lot from your way of working with the patients.
My gratitude to our supportive team of secretaries. Jacquelien and Henny, without your help I would literally be lost in translation. Astra Wurff - Veenstra, thank you for all help in the matters related to the children studies. Dear Maria, I miss the peaceful atmosphere that typically surrounds you. Thank you for your kindness.
Prof. Zwinderman, dear Koos, your door was always open for my numerous “urgent” statistical dilemmas. I mostly enjoyed how our serious conversations would lead to friendly discussions about the meaning of life, such as the one about the statistical model for the search of happiness.
I also want to direct some words to the team from the lung function department at AMC. It has always been a pleasure to walk into that corridor at C2 and be welcomed with a nice chat or a good morning smile. Every time I needed
