Biological and synthetic meshes in ventral hernia repair
Figure 2. Representative views at the 90-day follow-up assessment. Parietex composite 6 adhesions merely to the mesh edge do not contribute to the total adhesion score. Permacol
cecum adhered to the mesh. Surgisis I without adhesions and with minimal incorporation (2 of
7). Surgisis II complete coverage with adhesions and full incorporation (5 of 7). Dashed line
marks the original size of the mesh.
Mesh incorporation
At 30 days, no significant difference in mesh edge incorporation was seen between Parietex Composite (70%, IQR 53.0-80.0%), Prolene (50%, IQR 46.3-56.1%), Surgisis (34%, IQR 16.7-66.5%), Strattice (23%, IQR 5.0-70.0%) and Permacol meshes (48%, IQR 34.3-69.6). At 90 days the percentage of mesh incorporated of Parietex Composite (79%, IQR 61.2-83.0%) was significantly higher than that of Prolene (53% IQR 31.0-61.2%), Strattice (40%, IQR 9.5-57.4%) and Permacol (21%, IQR 16.0-41.4). The percentage of mesh edge incorporated of Surgisis was 66% (IQR 0.0-100.0%); five meshes showed complete incorporation, whereas two other meshes did not incorporate at all (figure 2 and 3). For each mesh no significant differences were observed between 30 and 90 days.
