Corien Swaan was born in Bergen (NH), the Netherlands, on 19 October 1967. After finalizing secondary school (Murmellius Gymnasium) in Alkmaar, she stu- died medicine at the University Medical Centre Utrecht between 1986 – 1994. In 1992, before starting her internships, she performed laboratory research on insulin binding receptor characteristics of skin fibroblasts through radio-immu- ne assays, during 6 months at the University of Florida in Gainesville, US. In 1994 she worked as junior house officer at St.Mary’s Hospital, Mumias, Kenya, which included the evaluation of the hospital’s malnutrition programme and a retrospective study on AIDS symptomatology, determining the predictive value of symptoms for positive Western Blot Tests.
After obtaining her medical degree, Corien worked as rotating senior house officer in Ziekenhuis Gelderse Vallei (Ede/Bennekom) until she joined Méde- cins sans Frontières. In 1997 she started as medical doctor in a district health programme in Uruzgan (Afghanistan) focussing on primary health care and trai- ning of traditional birth attendants. In the same year she obtained her diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene at the University of Liverpool, UK. In 1998 she worked as medical doctor in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), amongst others directing a drug distribution programme. In 1999 she became project coordinator of the national natural disaster preparedness and response programme (NDPREP) in Bangladesh, which included a post-cyclone emergen- cy mission in Orissa, India. Later, she became elected board member of the MSF-Holland association from 2008 until 2011, and delegate at the MSF Inter- national General Assembly between 2011- 2016.
In 2000 Corien continued her dedication to public health by a medical speci- alization at the Netherlands School of Public Health (NSPOH), with the subspeci- alisation Infectious Disease Control, while working at the GGD Hollands Midden in Leiden. Since 2006 she works with the Landelijke Coördinatie Infectieziekten (LCI), of the Centre for Infectious Disease Control at the National Institute of Pu- blic Health and the Environment (CIb/RIVM). In 2012 she became head of LCI’s department for Prevention and Control, which, amongst others, coordinates superregional and national outbreaks, operates the 24/7 helpdesk for medical professionals with questions on infectious disease control and which functions as WHO IHR National Focal Point for the Netherlands. Furthermore, her depart- ment is involved in several European projects on infectious diseases prepared- ness, and, since 2017, operates the WHO Collaborative Centre for Infectious Diseases Preparedness and IHR Monitoring & Evaluation.
