Primary outcome – incisional hernia
The vast majority of the studies de ned incisional hernia with clinical examination as a protrusion of the laparotomy scar with the use of Valsalva’s maneuver. Only  ve studies used radiological examination in the identi cation of incisional hernias(2, 4, 12, 15, 32). There was no reporting on di erences of incisional hernia rates between elective and emergency laparotomies(2, 19-31). There were no signi cant di erences on incisional hernia rates when comparing non-absorbable and slowly-absorbable sutures or slowly-absorbable and fast- absorbable sutures (Figures 2and 3). There was a tendency towards fewer incisional hernias, when using non-absorbable sutures compared with fast- absorbable sutures, but this was not signi cant (Figure 4).
