Conclusions
We advocate more caution with implantation of biological meshes for abdominal wall repair. There seems to be no evidence for previously purported hypothesis that biological material enables ingrowth of cells and vessels resulting in a sustainable hernia repair. Implantation of biological mesh does not seem to reduce infection rate which is a signi cant factor for the recurrence of incisional hernia. Biological meshes might not have the required characteristics for implantation in clean environment with high infection rate and low incorporation of the mesh in the current experiment.
