We invited 203 medical students, of whom 74 (36%) agreed to par cipate and com- pleted the procedure. 29 par cipants were male, 45 were female. The mean age was 24.5, with a range of 22 to 39 years old. 22 par cipants were in year 4, 48 in year 5, and 4 in year 6 of the six-year undergraduate program. The par cipants were enrolled in 11 di erent clerkships: family medicine, internal medicine ward, internal medicine outpa ent clinic, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, social medicine, surgery outpa ent clinic, surgery ward and various elec ve clerkships.
The 74 sorts of the statements supported a maximum of ve pa erns, which were retained as a nal solu on a er analysis of compensability, clarity and dis nc ve- ness of the resul ng pa erns. The ve pa erns explain 43% of the total variance in the data. Each pa ern was de ned by 7 to 18 par cipants.
Table 1 presents the idealized sorts for each of the ve pa erns, as well as the dis n- guishing statements for each pa ern. There were no consensus statements.
