Michiel in ‘t Zandt was born on August 6th in Venlo, the Netherlands. There he attended the Rudolf Steiner-school and later the Valuascollege, from which he graduated in 2009 with the profile sciences and health. He subsequently went to the Radboud University in Nijmegen to study biology, starting with a bachelor’s degree in Biology, obtained cum laude in 2012, and followed by a master’s degree in the same field, also obtained cum laude in 2014. During his first master internship he studied recombination patterns in Petunia
plants using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) techniques. In his second internship, he studied a lab-scale anammox reactor using metagenomics, metatranscriptomics and metaproteomics techniques. For the latter he visited the Columbia University in the City of New York for five months. With a fueled passion for microbiology he joined the Microbiology department at Radboud University in 2015 to study methane cycling microorganisms in a warming world. Besides his PhD (60% of his time) he was a junior lecturer (40% of his time). He was involved in both bachelor’s and master’s courses on microbial metabolism, and in philosophy and ethics in microbiology. He obtained his University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) in March 2020. He will join KWR in January 2021 as a researcher in the field of microbiological water quality.
