Chapter 1 HL is defined as the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain health \[12\]. Paasche-Orlow and Wolf created a conceptual model which describes the causal pathway between inadequate health literacy and health outcomes (see Figure 1.1) \[13\].
