Rhythm of the action refers to the time aspect. It is described by
the dimension continuity (repetition or variety).
Space refers to the amount of space the action takes, related to the size of canvas or paper and the amount of material that is used.
The action of art making can have a large or a small amount of lining, which is described by the dimension type of lines (sketching or outlining/contour).
The use of colours refers to the amount of mixture of colours during the art making (a lot of mixture (mixing until a brown mass), mixing nuances or no mixture (where colours are used separately).
Shaping refers to actions that lead to removing art materials and adding art materials in order to create shapes. It is described
by the dimension cumulation (only add art material or add and remove repetitively). The consistency of shapes is another dimension.
This category refers to the amount of exploration: searching for acknowledging, using, experimenting and playing with art materials’ properties
Organisation and interconnection of categories of material interaction Through axial and selective coding, two main categories and one core category emerged (see Figure 1). The first main category concerned physical expression, which included the subcategories ‘movement’, ‘rhythm’, ‘tempo’, ‘grip’, ‘pressure’ and ‘physical contact’ as these were all directly related to physical action. This main category was conditional; without it, there was no material interaction. According to the participants the subcategories were always present during art making and showed a lot of interrelatedness. The second main category concerned design expression, and included the subcategories ‘structure’, ‘lining’, ‘shaping’ and ‘use of colour’. According to the participants this main category was not conditional. The subcategories resulted from a combination of physical categories. They showed less overlap and could be observed separately. The category ‘dialogue’ – making use of art materials’ properties – was the core category as it overarched the two main categories and interconnected all other categories. The participants stated that it provided information about the capability of the client to tune in and adjust to the art materials’ properties. The amount of
