In step 1, five art therapists were interviewed (see interviews below). These interviews were analyzed by open coding, resulting into a code tree (see results below).
Based on theoretical sampling, in step 2, two more art therapists were interviewed. These interviews were also open coded. Both the five initial and the two additional interviews were analyzed by axial coding. This resulted in main and sub categories.
In step 3, two art therapists who had been interviewed before, were interviewed again. All nine interviews were then analyzed by selective coding, leading to the core category material interaction that linked all categories into a theoretical framework.

Sampling occurred within the existing professional network of the national research Centre for Arts Therapies (http://kenvak.hszuyd.nl/, KenVaK, 2014). Seven art therapists were purposely selected based on the principle of theoretical sampling (Corbin & Strauss, 2008). Participating art therapists were women with 8-25 years of working experience as art therapists. All therapists worked in adult mental health care settings (psychosocial, psychiatry daytime and inpatient, rehabilitation, special
