The past four years have been an exiting and pleasant journey, filled with joy and sweat. When I came to Eindhoven University of Technology in September 2014, I was picked up by Dr. Hong and attracted by the charming campus and the research atmosphere. From that moment I knew a totally new life began. The experience for pursuing the PhD degree in TU/e is unforgettable and remarkable. I wish to thank everyone that accompanied and helped me during this period, without them I can never finish this adventure.
I would like to thank my promotor Prof. Volker Hessel for providing me this precious opportunity to dive deep into the chemical engineering science and helped me during the four years. You are an excellent promotor, and a nice friend. You not only guide me how to think scientificlly and write professionally, but also constantly encouraged me and gave me advices, and even contacted resources outside TU/e to help me tackle the problems. Moreover, you gave me with many valuable advices, and allow me to have enough freedom for carrying out my own ideas. With your help I gradually build up my independence as a researcher. It is a great pleasure working by your side. Despite now you are in Australia, you still encourage me a lot. I wish you all the best in Australia.
I wish to express my gratitude to my co-supervisors Dr. Qi Wang and Dr. Sergey Starostin. Both of you are great person to work with. Your extensive knowledge and experience in plasma chemistry and material science lead to a huge extension of my knowledge in this field, and I’m still nourishing from that after 4 years. For Qi, without your help and encouragement I never have this opportunity to study in the Netherlads. I still remember the first interview you arranged, the useful and inspiring advice you gave during my application. After I came to TU/e, you have been not only my daily supervisor for giving valuable guidance but also a nice sister and a friend in my life. For Dr. Sergey, you provided a lot of solution for every single problem I encounterd, and it turned out to be a right one for most cases. I truly admire your responsible and cautious attitude towards work. The way of critical thinking is something I learned most from you, and it helped me build up an analytical mind for my future careers. I would say, it is a crucial asset I acquired in this period. Despite the time- consuming trip from Tilburg to Eindhoven, you still manage to get to the University every progress meeting with us and give suggestions.
I would like to thank those people who helped me in my project with setup building and nanomaterials characterizations: Erik van Herk, Carlo Buijs, Marlies Coolen-Kuppens and Peter Lipman (Chemical Reactor Engineering), you are distinctive technicians in our group. Hope I have not bothered you too much in the past four years. Anne Spoelstra and Paul Bomans (Materials and Interface Chemistry), my coaches for TEM characterization who taught me being patient and hands-on skill that are necessary for performing reliable result. Ingeborg Schreur (Materials and Interface Chemistry), who nicely trained me how to use SEM and Raman spectroscopy so that I can dive into the fantastic nano-scale world. Marco Hendrix (Physical Chemistry), you are nice, humorous and give me full support in XRD. Tiny Verhoeven (Molecular Catalysis), thanks for your help with the XPS analysis. Stefan Meskers (Macromolecular and Organic Chemistry), who taught me how to operate the
