The completion of this thesis is about to become a reality of my many years of work. I would not have been able to complete this thesis without the support and encouragement of a large number of people during my PhD research at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam.
To prof. dr. Jenneke Klein-Nulend: Dear Jenneke, I am so grateful that I did my PhD study under your supervision. You always supported and encouraged me when I got problem and frustration. You always motivated me to attend conferences and meetings. I clearly remembered the trip of attending the ASBMR conference in United States. After each of presentations, you always explained the contents of presentation to me. During the break, you introduced some outstanding professors to me. For the talking, you always practiced my oral English. For the writing, you spent a lot of time to correct and rephrase the sentences. For the images, you gave your excellent advises to make the figures better. For the abstract and poster, you also spent a lot of time to make them perfect with me. Now, my oral English, written English and image making have been improved a lot. All these studies contribute to the development of my research career. I will not forget the experience of my PhD study in Amsterdam.
To prof. dr. Richard T Jaspers: Dear Richard, I am so happy to have you as my promotor. You have a lot of knowledge in mind. You have always come up with very nice ideas about my research. These ideas have helped me greatly improve my studies and manuscripts. I also enjoyed our meetings that inspired me to do fun and more work. I want to thank you for always supporting me. Although I have not done much work in your lab, I can always get help from your lab. I also want to thank you for sending me nice papers. I respect you very much. I wish you the best of luck in all your plans.
To dr. Astrid D Bakker: Dear Astrid, thank you very much for your support and guidance. I have learned a lot from you about how to do scientific work. You taught me how to organize my experimental data. This is very useful for my studies and future career. I am happy to receive your comments every time. From those comments I knew how to write results, especially how to write statistical results. I also want to thank you for sharing nice papers with me. Those papers helped me a lot to understand my project and write my manuscripts. I admire you very much. I wish you and your daughter the very best.
To dr. Gang Wu: Dear Gang, I want to thank you for introducing me to study in ACTA. I also want to thank you for giving me a reference letter to apply the Chinese scholarship. Everything started with an email. Glad I read your paper and sent you an email. Fortunately, I got the scholarship. I was so happy with that. When I arrived in Amsterdam, I clearly remembered that you had treated me to my first lunch in the main building. That lunch was so
