Development of receptive vocabulary 85 defined by Canale (1983; see Section 2.3 in Chapter 2) to get a more complete picture of the second language of newly arrived migrant pupils. While this chapter on receptive vocabulary focused on linguistic competence, the next chapter on narrative ability, Chapter 5, will focus on both linguistic competence and discourse competence.
