Josephine Franken was born on the 6th of April 1991 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. She is the middle one of three children of Theo Franken and Elsbeth Nijhuis. She spent most of her childhood in Deventer and attended high school at the Etty Hillesum Lyceum, where she graduated cum laude at the gymnasium. After graduation she moved to Utrecht to study medicine at the University of Utrecht (2009).
During her study she enjoyed playing hockey (Utrecht Student Hockey Club) and joined the fraternity Collegium Studiosorum Veritas. In 2012 she went to Provincial Hospital Limbe in Cameroon for an extracurricular internship in Surgery. In 2013 she went to the Academic Hospital Paramaribo for her internship in Gynaecology. She worked as a student teacher at the clinical department. In the last year of medical school she completed her senior internships in general surgery at the University Medical Center Utrecht.
After graduating from medical school in december 2016 Josephine started working as a surgical resident (not in training), initially at the department of surgery in the Sint Antonius Ziekenhuis in Nieuwegein (supervisor dr. D. Boerma) for a period of 1,5 years, followed by the University Medical Center Utrecht (supervisor prof. dr. M.R. Vriens) for another year.
Early in her medical studies Josephine had a special interest in surgery. In her third year, she had started doing scientific research at the department of Pediatric Surgery in the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital supervised by prof. dr. D.C. Van der Zee, dr. M.Y.A. Lindeboom, dr. S.H.A.J. Tytgat and dr. F.A. Mauritz concerning laparoscopic gastrostomy placement in children. She persented results of her research at multiple international congresses of medical organizations, such as the European Pediatric Surgeon Association (2013) and the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery (2014, 2015). She completed this research along with her clinical activities and this eventually led to the completion of this thesis.
Josephine lives with Nick in Amsterdam.
