Page 41 - Postoperative Intra-Abdominal Adhesions- New insights in prevention and consequences
P. 41
Current status postoperative abdominal adhesions
abdominal wall repair and/or a bridging technique biological meshes seem to be the best choice, probably in combination with a biosynthetic mesh [166, 167].
Conclusion 2
The formation of abdominal adhesions is a dynamic and complex process influenced by many parameters. During the last decades knowledge about pathophysiology, incidence and clinical impact of adhesions has increased dramatically; on the other hand understanding of pathophysiology is still insufficient due to its complexity and the magnitude of the problem of postoperative adhesions is still widely underestimated. Currently no adhesion prevention product has been adapted for general use. Furthermore, the ideal mesh in order to minimize adhesion prevention in laparascopic incisional or open bridging techniques for incisional hernia repair still has to be found.
