                                About the author
Max Ditzel was born on January 20th 1983 in Utrecht. When he was 5 years old the family moved to Apeldoorn, were he finished primary school and graduated from the Stedelijk Gymnasium in 2001. He started studying Business Administration in Groningen, but fortunately he was admitted for the study medicine in Erasmus Medical Center one year later. In the following years he worked at the Ikazia Hospital as a member of the student team ‘Les Forgerons’. In 2007 Max completed his scientific internship at the REPAIR research group of Prof. Dr. J.J. Jeekel and Prof. Dr. J.F. Lange, resulting in the start of his PhD before starting medical rotations in 2008. He obtained his Medical Degree in 2011 and after 3 months of additional full-time PhD work Max commenced his work as a junior house resident in general surgery in the IJsselland Hospital in Capelle a/d IJssel in 2012. At the end of that year he moved to Amsterdam and started working in the Flevo Hospital in Almere (Dr. P.C.M. Verbeek). In this hospital Max commenced his surgical training in 2014, continued the following two years in Gelre Ziekenhuizen (Dr. P. van Duijvendijk). The fourth and fifth year of his training he was employed in the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam (Prof. Dr. O.R.C. Busch and Dr. E.J.M. Nieveen van Dijkum). For his last year he returned to the Flevo Hospital, this time mentored by Dr. K. in’t Hof. During his surgical training Max continued his research work finally leading to the writing of this thesis.
