and finally 109 were suitable for analysis with a mean follow-up of 7.5 years. These data on the long-term complications after acute and elective operation in case of diverticulitis show that the severity of the abdominal complaints is influenced neither by the stage of the disease nor by the fact of whether it was performed in an acute or elective setting.
From the results of Chapter 7 and 8 it was concluded that the hypothesis of a causative role for adhesions with regard to chronic abdominal complaints cannot be supported. Whether this should lead to a different approach or not will be discussed in the next section.
