Study limitations
Several limitations should be acknowledged. The current study was retrospective in nature and the data was generated from a single centre. Furthermore, the measurements of layer-specific LV GLS may not be generalizable for all vendors and the cut-off value of layer-specific LV GLS provided in this study may not be applicable in other study populations. In addition, circumferential strain may have provided more insight into the LV mechanics of out study population, nevertheless this has not been performed due to feasibility. Finally, the values of layer-specific analysis may be highly interdependent with adjacent myocardial tissue which may not be corrected by the current software.
Conclusions
5
In contemporary STEMI patients, epicardial LV GLS is a strong correlate of adverse LV remodeling at 6 months follow-up after adjusting for clinical, biological and echocardiographic variables. In addition, layer-specific LV GLS may reflect the amount of myocardial infarct size. Therefore, layer-specific LV GLS may further aid in the risk stratification of STEMI patients.
