ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Well, here I am, about to finish one long and challenging chapter of my life. I wouldn’t have succeeded in completing this PhD thesis without the support and encouragements of so many people.
Prof. dr. Ghassem Amoabediny, thank you so much for providing me with the opportunity to do a dual degree program at University of Tehran and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. As challenging as it was, it allowed me to gain invaluable experiences both in Tehran and in Amsterdam. Dear Prof. Amoabediny, I learned so many things from you. From writing research and business proposals to team work and team management skills. Thank you for your never ending guidance, support, and encouragements throughout my PhD studies.
Prof. dr. Jenneke Klein-Nulend, I am so grateful that I met you and that I had the chance to do my PhD studies under your supervision. Thank you for all the precious time you put in helping me make beautiful papers. Your tips and comments were invaluable. This thesis would not have been beautifully done if it wasn’t for your support.
To Dr. Marco Helder: Dear Marco, you were always there for me. Every time I faced a problem, I knew that I could count on you to guide me in the right direction and help me figure out a solution. You helped me in every aspect of my PhD thesis, from managing the paper works related to my several visits to Amsterdam, to designing studies and experiments. I am deeply grateful.
To Dr. Behrouz Zandieh-Doulabi: Dear Behrouz, thank you for always answering my questions with a smile on your face and helping me build up my lab skills. I also want to thank you for the countless number of times that you have helped me during my stay in Amsterdam. I wish you the best.
To Dr. Javad Mohammadi: Dear Dr. Mohammadi, thank you for always supporting me during my PhD and helping me sort things out at University of Tehran. You were always available whenever I needed you and did everything you could to make my life easier during my PhD.
I would also like to thank several people at ACTA who welcomed me openly during my visits to Amsterdam. Prof. dr. Cees Kleverlaan and Dr. Jan Harm Koolstra, thank you for being there when it was needed and for your valuable comments, support, and guidance during my PhD research. Dear Jolanda, Cor, Marion Ineke, Ton, Teun, thank you for all your help and support in the lab and small chats during coffee breaks.
