Allright, here we go. Over the last four years so many people, from both inside and outside academia, have made a huge impact on my life. I cannot express my gratitude for you enough, I would need a second booklet for that. But, let’s give it a shot.
First my promotor, Floris. I am incredibly glad I did this PhD under your supervision. You ensured that I was always critical of my work, both in quality and quantity. I valued our weekly brainstorm sessions where we came up with dozens of ideas, not many PhD students have that luxury. What I appreciate most however, is that you always listened to my ideas, suggestions, and advice. This helped me so much in becoming very invested in my work, and I have not been as proud about my work as I did during my PhD. Thank you for that, sincerely.
My co-promotor, Bauke. We ‘adopted’ you on our project just a few months in, and I could not have asked for a better daily supervisor. Countless times you have given me invaluable advice about research, and anything related to being a researcher. Your open-door policy, which I might have used a bit too much, meant that I always had somebody to discuss problems and opportunities with. I hope the follow-up project with Yuri (good luck man!) will be just as fruitful, pleasant and educational!
About talking too much, office 8038 & lab 8039... “Het sfeer in dit kantoor” was generally a sentence used for when things got downright silly, which were the best of times. My paranyphms Ian and Jordi, and the other office-mates Daniele, Dieuwertje, Jorin, Sjoerd, and Tjerk, thank you for the help, discussions, and allowing me to ventilate when something incredibly silly bothered me way too much. It truly was the right amount of crazy for me. I also want to explicitly thank Judith for helping me with so many lab and teaching issues, as well as joining in on ‘ff lekker klagen over dingen”.
My fellow PhD’ers and post-docs. Alexandre, Alyssa, Ana, Andrada, Andrii, Annemieke, Ariadni, Bas, Caroline, DJ, Dongdong, Ellen, Esther, Esther, Fatima, Florine, Fred, Ghazal, Gina, Jay, Jorge, Kaustub, Kushal, Lucas, Medea, Michel, Milou, Nathalja, Pepijn, Qiang, Rafael, Rick, Rui, Satesh, Sevil, Si, Simon, Sidhu, Steffi, Sybren, Sweccha, Vincent, Wei, Wilco. Thank you for the Karaoke- nights, game-nights, go-karting, dinners, coffee-runs @ plaza, October fests, PhD-trips, partying at chains, tour- and footballpoules, FSB-borrels, maternity/paternity visits, Efteling visit, friday lunches, and sooo much more. You guys rock!
No words can describe the amount of patience and friendliness the staff has with us PhDs. Aleida, Bep, Elly, Esther, Meta, thank you for helping me with literally ANY problem I had, be it from asking how a TSP works, salary questions, or making sure I am mistaken for Pepijn.JPerforming research would be impossible without Barend, Elbert, Frank, Hans, Henny, Jelmer, and Pepijn, as
